Wiki- A collection of websites in hypertext, each of them can be visited and edited by anyone.

“Wiki wiki” means "rapidly" in the Hawaiian language.

A wiki is a collaborative web page where you can publish and/or change information that is shared. If used in the classroom, it creates a collaborative learning environment that allows everyone's ideas to have equal weight. The collaboration involved in these websites simulates real world work environments.

Wikis can address any question, including broad topics such as the meaning of life, or narrow topics like where to find great buffalo wings.

Wikis create digital group knowledge portfolios.

The simplest online database that could possibly work. --Ward Cunningham

"Different people have different ideas about what a wiki really is, but whatever angle you look at it, a wiki is software that handles complex problems with simple solutions."

The first wiki was designed byWard Cunningham and Bo Leuf in 1995 .

What's So Good About Wikis?

Cunningham and Leuf's  intent was for to make their hypertext database collaborative. From the very start, they decided that anyone should be able to edit any page from a simple Web form. While this may seem to invite vandalism, they overcame this problem by storing the history of each document. If vandalism does occur, anyone can roll the site back to how it was before the vandalism. Making the site easily editable gives it numerous advantages. First, it encourages many people to participate to create the Website together, which is why wikis make great knowkedge bases. On both public and internal Websites, wikis allow writers and editors direct access to the Website, reducing the load on IT staff. Click here to see their original wiki.

Since then, programmers have created many wiki-inspired programs and wiki Websites. Most of these stay true to the goal of simplicity.

Wikis can be  used for a large variety of tasks, from personal note-taking to collaborating online, creating an internal knowledge base, assembling an online

community, and managing a traditional website. The possibilities might make wikis seem like a daunting system, but commitment to simplicity makes wiki tools a breeze.
